Bandwith Caps…
June 3, 2008Seriously…WTF.
“Time Warner Cable will launch a trial program on Thursday which will impose monthly Internet consumption caps on new subscribers in Beaumont, Texas. Following a two-month grace period, cable users will pay $1 for each additional gigabyte consumed beyond the cap.”
So they cant break congress to let them limit what sites you can visit with the net neutrality BS, so they do the next best thing…cap your usage…So glad I use verizon…until they do it too.
“The lowest level of service is a 768Kbps connection with a 5GB cap for $29.95 per month. The high-end package will offer 15MBps with a 40GB cap for $54.90 per month. Consumers will pay by the gigabyte for consumption in excess of the established caps. Customers will be able to see how much bandwidth they have left by visiting the Time Warner Cable web site.”
Ok wait…Let me get this right…You are going to limit someone with a 768kbps connection to 5GB a month, that works for grandma because she doesn’t spend the day watching youtube and reading every article on digg. Lets do some math here…
15mbps = 15000kbps
15000/8 = 1.875 Megabytes/sec
1.9 / 40 = ~46 min.
and
768/8 = 96Kilobytes/sec
96 / 5 = 19.2 min…
Wait what? If I give you $55 a month you give me a total of 46 minutes of full speed download time? Thats total BS. America keeps getting more effed up by the day, whats next? Am I going to get arrested because I say that John McCain will ruin this country with all his crap and lack of knowledge…that he ADMITTED to “not knowing anything about economics”. Or that Obama is a putz, he knows how to talk to people, giving good speeches wont run a country, sorry. And Hilliary is going to ruin the whole election with all her crap.
Back on topic. So I want to watch youtube videos, load images that are in the ~5MB range a few time a week, I better not do it for more than 46 minutes a month!?!!??! That makes no sense at all. Congrats Time Warner, you just ruined the reputation that your company has tried so hard to get started…one of two things are going to happen. You will become the next Comcast and no one will choose your ISP because you are just looking to nickel and dime all your customers, or you are going to loose all your customers.
“Kevin Leddy, Time Warner Cable executive vice president of advanced technology, told the Associated Press that the variable billing model is being adopted to address the disparity in bandwidth consumption among Time Warner Cable users. Five percent of the subscribers are consuming half of the local line capacity, Leddy says.”
I was always told to not go with the majority. And I am glad I am staying as far away as I can. I will enjoy the unlimited bandwidth use for 60/month for as long as I can…hmm what movie should I download tonight?
